The Washington DC Zabava: A Celebration of Ukrainian Spirit

The Washington DC Zabava is a time-honored tradition that has upheld the vibrant spirit of Ukrainian culture for decades. Zabavy (festive dances) have been celebrated around the world since the early 1900s, traditionally held between the New Year and the beginning of Lent.

During World War II and the years that followed, Zabavy were banned in Ukraine. But thanks to the resilience of Ukrainian refugees who fled to other countries, this cherished tradition lived on—preserving our culture, music, and community spirit.

Today, the Washington DC Zabava and Debutante Ball are part of a proud legacy shared across the United States. We invite you to help us continue this tradition—not letting it fade into the cracks of history, but keeping it alive for future generations to dance, celebrate, and remember.

Washington DC Zabava

The Washington DC Zabava has been a cherished tradition since the early 1980’s. For many Ukrainians from the DMV and beyond, it’s a night filled with lasting memories, rich cultural celebration, and vibrant community spirit.

As a fundraiser, the DC Zabava has supported numerous Ukrainian organizations in their mission to preserve and promote Ukrainian heritage.

With your continued support, we hope to carry this legacy forward for generations to come.

2026 Benficiary

Proceeds from this year’s Washington DC Zabava will benefit the Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies of Greater Washington, founded in 1963. For over 60 years, this school has been a cornerstone of our community, dedicated to preserving the Ukrainian language, history, and cultural identity for future generations.

By supporting this school, you’re helping educate the next generation of Ukrainian Americans and ensuring our heritage continues to thrive in the heart of the DMV.

These types of event are really important, to get together as a community, and celebrate our traditions
